City Description
Champaign is a city located in the east central section of the state of Illinois.
The city is located in, and shares it's name with Champaign County.
Champaign is sometimes referred to as the "Silicon Prairie" or atleast part of "Silicon Prairie" because of the many technology startup companies located in the area.
As of 2000, the population of Champaign was 67,518 and by 2007 the population has been estimated to have increased to 75,254.
Champaign is 124 miles west of Indianapolis and 135 miles south of Chicago.
The city was first founded in 1855 as West Urbana, but was changed in 1860 with its first city charter.
The city and Champaign County both draw their names from Champaign County in Ohio.
Champaign and it's neighboring city Urbana, together are the home to the University of Illinois.
